Gigolo and drifter Chance Wayne returns to his hometown as the companion of a faded movie star, Alexandra Del Lago, whom he hopes to use to help him break into the movies. Chance runs into trouble when he finds his ex-girlfriend, the daughter of the local politician Tom "Boss" Finley, who more or less forced him to leave his daughter and the town many years ago.

Sweet Bird of Youth is a tamer and tidied but arresting version of Tennessee Williams' Broadway play. It's a glossy, engrossing hunk of motion picture entertainment, slickly produced by Berman.

Sweet Bird of Youth, for all its graphics and the vigorous performance of its top roles, has the taint of an engineered soap opera, wherein the soap is simply made of lye, that's all.

Wonderfully Tennessee Williams! Geraldine Page as the fallen movie star was fantastic as was Paul Newman. I love how Williams' plays deal with controverasial themes and of course this one provides. Dealing with the shocks and scandals of abortion was huge in the early 1960s, but in the south, it was truely revolutionary.

A film taken from a play in which it's hard to imagine that the play isn't infinitely better to watch. All the lead actors do their part, although the over-acting is quite apparent on the part of Page and Torn. Ed Begley and Newman are easily the best things about the film. Some very odd editing at times took me out of the story for a few minutes.

This was MUCH better than the heavily censored version of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". Page plays the washed-up actress hoping for a second shot at stardom. Newman is the pitiful sycophant with a thirst for fame. Although it did not go by the book, it added its own charm. VERY southern, VERY dramatic. Fine acting, great casting.
