The film is carried on strong performances, but it doesn't hit me at a gut level - due to Brooks' stolid direction and the removal of some of the play's most primal themes. Certainly better than the ridiculous 1989 TV adaptation (starring Mark Harmon in the Newman role, Rip Torn (moving up the generational ladder) in the Begley role and Elizabeth Taylor in the Geraldine Page role), the film is a slight misfire as Williams adaptations go, but still a must see for fans of the man who put an edge on family tension, sexual neurosis and implacable violence.

still the best version of this pitch perfect casting & performances

This was MUCH better than the heavily censored version of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". Page plays the washed-up actress hoping for a second shot at stardom. Newman is the pitiful sycophant with a thirst for fame. Although it did not go by the book, it added its own charm. VERY southern, VERY dramatic. Fine acting, great casting.

Paul Newman and especially Geraldine Page shine in this lesser-known Tennessee Williams yarn. One of the most provocative films taken from Williams' plays, "Sweet Bird of Youth" isn't quite on the same level as "A Streetcar Named Desire" (few films are, really), but it is a gem in its own right.

1. Paul Newman film 2. Buthered version of a stage play. The film even after censorship is a great piece of southern cinema. Paul Newman plays well with the roles of steadfast lover and the stargazed hollywood hopeful. I really felt for the characters. I could have done with out the governer's lover ( she was also in Giant and annoys the heck out of me) - It guess its worth seeing her finger slammed into a jeweled egg ( for real!)
