Gigolo and drifter Chance Wayne returns to his hometown as the companion of a faded movie star, Alexandra Del Lago, whom he hopes to use to help him break into the movies. Chance runs into trouble when he finds his ex-girlfriend, the daughter of the local politician Tom "Boss" Finley, who more or less forced him to leave his daughter and the town many years ago.

Newman is a young man who just wants a big break to make it as a Hollywood actor. Page is an alcoholic former movie star who has made a film recently but is so obsessed with age she has run off with younger lover Newman to his hometown in Florida. Newman's character loves the daughter of a local dirty politician who feels the young man is not good enough for his daughter and is gearing up for a political rally. Sexual and emotional tension really heat up in this Tennessee Williams adaptation. The censorship at the time keeps the film a little too restrained, but terrific dialogue and great performances - especially by Geraldine Page and Ed Begley as the corrupt politician.

A great cast makes this Tennessee Williams play a great piece of glossy Hollywood drama. Newman is terrific as a local boy returning home with a has been movie actress, but get's caught up with an old flame, much to the annoyance of her political boss father, played by the wonderful Ed Begley. It's also fun to see a young, curly haired Rip Torn as Begley's son. And as with most Williams film adaptations, this one was also changed by the censors, who required changing the ending of the film, eliminating any reference to castration. But in any case, it's a great film.

There is no clearer face for the conflict and despondency of the decade of the sixties than Newman's magnificent bastards.
