Gigolo and drifter Chance Wayne returns to his hometown as the companion of a faded movie star, Alexandra Del Lago, whom he hopes to use to help him break into the movies. Chance runs into trouble when he finds his ex-girlfriend, the daughter of the local politician Tom "Boss" Finley, who more or less forced him to leave his daughter and the town many years ago.

Sweet Bird of Youth is a stellar film. It is about a drifter who returns to his hometown after trying to make in the movies. Paul Newman and Geraldine Page give amazing performances. The screenplay is well written and kept me interested. Richard Brooks did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed this motion picture because of the drama. Sweet Bird of Youth is highly recommended.

Newman does Tennessee Williams very well and he does tremendously well in Sweet Bird of Youth. He is the ultimate hustler who meets obstacles that he can't overcome. Brilliant.

Newman is a young man who just wants a big break to make it as a Hollywood actor. Page is an alcoholic former movie star who has made a film recently but is so obsessed with age she has run off with younger lover Newman to his hometown in Florida. Newman's character loves the daughter of a local dirty politician who feels the young man is not good enough for his daughter and is gearing up for a political rally. Sexual and emotional tension really heat up in this Tennessee Williams adaptation. The censorship at the time keeps the film a little too restrained, but terrific dialogue and great performances - especially by Geraldine Page and Ed Begley as the corrupt politician.

Sweet Bird of Youth is structured like a resurrection tale. Chance Wayne is thrown into all types of abasement, dragged this way and that, beaten to a bloody pulpy (figuratively, of course), and finally rises from the ashes, a new man.
