I've never really understood the appeal of John Wayne. That being said, this is a solid early western. Strangley I kept thinking of Werner Herzog while watching it. I think because of the reality of some of the scene, particularly one where the wagon train has to be lowered down a cliff and it was clearly done for real. Pretty cool, and makes one realize how lame modern CG effects are.

An early Wayne picture. The movie suffers from rough dialogue, at times, and has some sequencing issues. The great thing about this movie is the background action. Most scenes have great depth of field and offer a lot of details. This film was rereleased in a 70 mm widescreen print, despite widescreen not being invented until 1952, which is quite nice.
