Part murder mystery, part comedy, part drama. Another Robert Altman ensemble piece.

J. Hoberman 20 May 2005

Long before it ends, its leisurely immersion in the Mississippi Delta has turned downright lukewarm and even chilly.

One of my favorite American films ever. I really miss Altman.

David N. Butterworth 01 Jan 2000

Altman's latest round robin relies a little too heavily on plot, plus some of the characterizations are too eccentric for their own good. But even a minor Altman movie challenges an audience in a way few Hollywood products can.

Gillian Flynn 17 Jul 2001

In theaters, the lazy haziness of this Southern ensemble comedy made the story feel like it was stuck in the mud.
