Fitzcarraldo (1982)

Fitzcarraldo is a dreamer who plans to build an opera house in Iquitos, in the Peruvian Amazon, so, in order to finance his project, he embarks on an epic adventure to collect rubber, a very profitable product, in a remote and unexplored region of the rainforest.

Everything negative that could be said about this film is a fair criticism - it goes on forever in endlessly meandering directions, its main character is a complete mystery save his obsession with Enrico Caruso, it leads the viewer on such an overblown epic experience that one is completely drained after seeing it - yet these criticisms are precisely what make this a masterpiece. The film is almost a documentary account of its director Werner Herzog's own obsession; at its end, when the main character has a triumphant welcoming after literally hauling a huge ship over a mountain and then successfully navigating it through previously unconquered rapids, it is very much Herzog's victory we are watching. And it, the complete artistic success and fulfillment of an all-encompassing obsession, is indeed a sight to behold.

Absolutely brilliant plot! A metaphor for all of life's tremendous effort! The film is great if for nothing else than to be able to watch the amazing engineering feat of hauling a 19th century river steamer overland (which was actually accomplished for the film). That, and a plot that delivers perhaps the most outstanding irony every written into a screenplay.
