The Big Knife (1955)

Movie star Charlie Castle draws the ire of Hollywood producer Stanley Hoff when he refuses to sign a new seven-year contract. Castle is sick of the low quality of the studio's films and wants to start a new life. While his estranged wife supports him in the decision, Castle's talent agent urges him to reconsider. When Castle continues to be uncooperative, Hoff resorts to blackmail in order to get his way.

One of my favorite Jack Palance performances! So sad, heartwarming, very Shakespearean.

Incisive drama based on the play by Clifford Odets still entertains, bringing a lurid tale of Hollywood secrets and excess to the level of Greek tragedy. Big surprise is how good Jack Palance is in the role of Charlie Castle, an A-list movie star who chafes under the yoke of tyrannical studio boss Stanley Hoff (Steiger) - a coiled spring of menace and malice who has Castle mysteriously under his thumb. A bit stagey (all the action takes place in one room), and some of the dialogue sounds a bit too high-minded and self-conscious at times, but the cast is first-rate, especially Steiger, who steals every scene he's in - looking like a cross between Dr. Strangelove, John Belushi and a pit bull! Nice Saul Bass title sequence is a bonus.

This movie starts off with a lot of promise: a dynamite, evocative Saul Bass credit sequence and a terrific cast of Jack Palance, Ida Lupino, Rod Steiger, Shelley Winters, Everett Sloane and Wendell Corey. Unfortunately, it doesn't really make good on that promise until the third act. The rest of it is a lot of stage-bound (98% of the movie takes place in one room) exposition and overblown melodrama. Although a scathing indictment of the film industry, it missteps in trying to get us to care too much about an actor's career. The script, based on an Odets play, has some excellent lines, though, and the performances are all pretty good. It would just be much better if the first hour or so were greatly condensed.

Wow..if you thought The Player was anti-Hollywood, you haven't seen Jack Palance in The Big Knife. The photography is great (all shot in 2 weeks!) There is some melodramatic acting, but that fits the themes and style of the movie. Throw in a great turn by Shelly Winters and Rod Steiger as the studio Exec and you've got a winner!
