Knife in the Water (1962)

On their way to an afternoon on the lake, husband and wife Andrzej and Krystyna nearly run over a young hitchhiker. Inviting the young man onto the boat with them, Andrzej begins to subtly torment him; the hitchhiker responds by making overtures toward Krystyna. When the hitchhiker is accidentally knocked overboard, the husband's panic results in unexpected consequences.

this shit is bomb. best writing ever. best score ever. and how'd he do all that with just 3 ppl inside the space of a sailboat? such a nail biter

Loved it. Polanski's debut film is as unsettling as the rippling water moving the tragic sailboat throughout the course of the film. Subtitles were kind of a bitch, but the camera work is amazing.

A stunning, well-made film. The images burn into your mind. Polanski is a master filmmaker(too bad that he isn't a master human being). I don't understand what this film means(I think it is a modern-day story of Christ's temptation by the Devil with the young man as Christ and the middle-aged man as the Devil). Not a typical Brett Ratner movie but that is why it is glorious.

Roman Polanski's debut feature examples how the filmmaker had a masterful knack for tension right at the start of his career, but it's the more subtle elements that really make Knife in the Water a classic. A minimalist film in both cast and location, the film uses its trio of actors to explore themes regarding class and gender, all done in a way that's nerve-racking without being bombastic. Outstanding cinematography too, with Polanksi really generating the film ethos through close-up shots and deep-focus framing, and the film still contains some of the most unforgettable imagery of his career. A masterpiece of Polish cinema, that introduced the world to one of the late 20th century's most accomplished artists.
