Knife in the Water (1962)

On their way to an afternoon on the lake, husband and wife Andrzej and Krystyna nearly run over a young hitchhiker. Inviting the young man onto the boat with them, Andrzej begins to subtly torment him; the hitchhiker responds by making overtures toward Krystyna. When the hitchhiker is accidentally knocked overboard, the husband's panic results in unexpected consequences.

Reminds one that, in the hands of truly gifted people, less is indeed more.

The simplicity of this movie is what makes it so great, 90% of the movie takes part on a boat, with no other persons than a Man and his wife, and a hitchiker. Just like in 12 Angry Men, it shows how movies can be driven without any need of special effects or action. The camerawork is great, as always with Roman Polanski's movies.

Polanski's debut film is a crafty and subtle piece which focuses on the themes of sexual tension and the competitive nature of human beings. Having only three characters and spending 95% of the film on a yacht, you are brought in to the plot with a flow of dialogue and timing that grip your attention with a constant reckoning of where things will go. It has its dark undertones, but its score is rather upbeat, showcasing subtle jazz tunes that play as visually admirable bumps between dialogue sequences. This is a testament to the innovative simplicity of European 60s cinema and would jump start the career of talented, but personally controversial Roman Polanski.

This is masterfully directed with almost every shot brimming with suggestive framing and staging. Cynical, grim, and sexy, the film is essentially an exercise in sadism: nothing means anything the beyond the shifting power plays and masculine "pissing contests" on display. Characters torture each other psychologically for no real reason other than they can.

To think this is Roman Polanski's first feature is mind boggling. From the outset, Polanski establishes his craft and directorial power over the narrative, as evidenced by the believable performances of his three actors in addition to his impeccable mis-en-scene. This thriller is not akin to the whiz-bang theatrics of contemporary cinema. Rather, it unfolds in a slow burn fashion as the tension builds around a love triangle. What stands out from this film is the cinematography. Polanski's implementation of deep focus and composition is almost at the level of Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane." In addition, the jazzy music underscores the sexual tension lying beneath the surfaces of all three characters. A near masterpiece.
