The Beguiled (1971)

Offbeat Civil War drama in which a wounded Yankee soldier, after finding refuge in an isolated girls' school in the South towards the end of the war, becomes the object of the young women's sexual fantasies. The soldier manipulates the situation for his own gratification, but when he refuses to completely comply with the girls' wishes, they make it very difficult for him to leave.

Wow this is just chilling and stunning all at once. Themes and motifs out the wazoo. Very literary. Conflicts and all that. Very rich but sickening at times.

A western on the surface, but truly a horror movie, and likely Clint Eastwood's most underrated effort. Whether Clint is predator or prey, the ultimate message in all its glory is that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, yet alone many women.

It may be the least of the Eastwood - Siegel efforts but it's plenty entertaining. The film gets off to a slow, strange and mediocre start before building to a quick, strange and interesting colclusion. The only remarkable elements about the film are how un-PC it is and how strange it becomes. Not highly reccomended but any openminded viewer could do worse.

I worship this movie for 3 reasons: 1) This is one of Elizabeth Hartman's (one of my favorite actresses) stellar performances. 2) The Gothic story behind what seems a harmless group of fine young women is magnetic. 3) It was courageous to feature a Macabre scene that may raise eyebrows at that time. One of my films in my collection
