4/5 The Beguilled is a beautiful showcase of directorial profficiency, in the way Sofia Coppola creates a film that isnt only beautiful in a visual sense, but also in the way it explores crucial relationships between characters living in a the perfect location for isolated and visceral conflict, in which the drama reaches lunprecedented levels of psychological suspense.

If you're willing to forgive the anachronisms and whitewashing (both of which are fair criticisms) I think its ultimately a worthwhile remake. Coppola completely guts the story of melodrama and subplots. The result is a sort of bleak thriller about interpersonal conflict, where the way the women undermine one another is just as dangerous as the man who suddenly upends their daily lives.

If you go into the film with full intent to absorb, and you hang on every moment, it will deliver in abundance. If, on the other hand, you watch waiting and expecting, you'll bore yourself. Get lost and be rewarded.
