The Bedford Incident (1965)

During a routine patrol, a reporter is given permission to interview a hardened cold-war warrior and captain of the American destroyer USS Bedford. The reporter gets more than he bargained for when the Bedford discovers a Soviet sub and the captain begins a relentless pursuit, pushing his crew to breaking point.

The first half is very boring but the second half is absolutely gripping as the hunt for a Soviet submarine becomes dangerously close to death. Richard Widmark is one of my favourite actors

The happiest film ever! That was sarcasm in case you missed it. This has an interesting story, and the acting is fine, but man is it heavy handed, especially in the finale.

"The Bedford Incident" has a chilling lead performance from Richard Widmark, as well as grim, atmospheric cinematography by Gilbert Taylor, but the pacing sometimes flags, and the supporting characters are thinly sketched.

Oustanding little-known thriller aboard a destroyer armed with nuclear weapons. Richard Widmark and Sidney Portier are excellent as usual.

Good exploration of the potential for accidents, deterrents leading to escalation, offensive defensiveness and other uncomfortable issues. Poitier was good, as always, but Balsam and Widmark really stood out for me. The 'misunderstanding' came off as unlikely, but still some interesting points. Worth tracking down.
