The Cruel Sea (1953)

At the start of World War II, Cmdr. Ericson is assigned to convoy escort HMS Compass Rose with inexperienced officers and men just out of training. The winter seas make life miserable enough, but the men must also harden themselves to rescuing survivors of U-Boat attacks, while seldom able to strike back. Traumatic events afloat and ashore create a warm bond between the skipper and his first officer.

One of the greatest war movies ever made and certainly one of the most realistic. Much of the terminology, equipment and action performed by the actors is spot on, yet the story conveys the harshness of serving in The Battle of the Atlantic without any of the rah-rah patriotism or propaganda. Wonderfully done.

Jack Hawkins at his best. A movie that could only work in B&W. This a superb war drama and conveys (I assume) what it was really like for RN & MN personnel during the war.
