What do you get when you mix the dripping racism of Birth of a Nation, add in the over the top jingoism of Triumph of the Will, and genrously stir in generous amounts of historical fabrications along the lines of U571? Answer: Battleship Island. Director Ryoo Seung Wan attempts to make his self described "imagination of a prison break" into a historical drama, but his heavy handed and overt racist stereotyping destroy it's narrative focus, with characters and storyline shoved into every second of the grueling 2 hour hate fest that will leave the viewer feeling as battered as the fictional miners. Cinematography was good, and Sue An Kim was the only actor/actress that either didn't play an over the top character or a brooding cardboard cutout (Joong Ki Song, in one of the most tedious performances of his career). One star for the major historical innacuracies, the over the top and disgusting racial charactures, force feeding of narrative, and finally grueling 2 hour length. Skip this one, even in an online version if free.

The Battleship Island is flawed in characterization and narratives: it often does not provide and sometimes does not stick up to the real true events. But the film is exciting, intense, realistic and dark enough to entertain with impressive filmmaking.

Though Mr. Ryoo’s taste for heightened theatricality threatens his story’s credibility at times, there is no denying his skill with a large-scale action set piece.

One of the best movies i've ever seenj. Totally surprised. Great acting, especially fell in love with the little girl Soo-He who stole the show. Wow. Best Picture of the Year, certainly for foreign language category. Excellent cinematography. Truly EPIC!!

A pure work of fiction with many historical inaccuracies: the workers were Japanese and Korean, not entirely the latter; there was no wage discrimination; if anything was 'forced,' it was to save money as these workers had a tendency to drink and gamble; men were not snatched off the street to work on the island - this is utter fantasy; the final battle escape scene is also entirely fictional if there ever was one, and there was no plan to destroy the island by Japan - the island still stands and there are descendants of the area who can speak the truth. I can understand how much 'anti-Japan' sells in S. Korea, but the director really seems to overdo things. Perhaps he should focus a little on S. Korea's immediate northern neighbor.
