King of Devil's Island (2010)

Norwegian winter, 1915. On the island Bastøy, outside Oslo, a group of young boys aged 11 to 18, are held in an institution for delinquent youth, notorious for its sadistic regime. One day a new boy, Erling, arrives, determined to escape from the island. After a tragic incident, he ends up leading the boys in a violent uprising. When the boys manage to take over the island, 150 soldiers are sent in to restore order.

Stark juvie memoir evokes atrocious oppression with admirable restraint, layered characterisation and strong humanity.

A great character driven film about revolting against an unjust system. Easy to root against the powers that be with characters like these. Based on a true story.

Watched this during the 2011 Calgary International Film Festival. This movie has a powerful plot, solid acting, and incredible imagery. It had me feeling a wide range of emotions throughout. It took me a few days to decide to add this movie to the roster schedule as I wasn't sure if I wanted to watch a movie with subtitles. I'm glad I went as I have never been so captivated watching a movie. I am only posting this review now as I was thinking about it and thought I'd like to see it on Netflix and couldn't remember the name. I had to go the the calgaryfilm website and look through the archives to find the name. Sadly, it is not on Netflix. If you ever have a chance to watch this movie, do so.

Very moving. An insight into what happens when punishment is decided by where you sit in the hierarchy rather than the deed you have committed.
