The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970)

Double-crossed and left without water in the desert, Cable Hogue is saved when he finds a spring. It is in just the right spot for a much needed rest stop on the local stagecoach line, and Hogue uses this to his advantage. He builds a house and makes money off the stagecoach passengers. Hildy, a prostitute from the nearest town, moves in with him. Hogue has everything going his way until the advent of the automobile ends the era of the stagecoach.

A surprisingly sweet western from the master of bloodshed, Sam Peckinpaw

Not a fun movie or even a compelling story on the surface. However, there is some deeper meaningful stuff going on. A very good Peckinpah film in that the whole movie hinges on the recurring Peckinpah theme of the man of the old west and the incursion of the modern era. I think he did a much better job of it in "The Wild Bunch". The actors all do a fine job and the direction is good there just seems to be too many lag moments and I really can't stand the Hildy character. The music? Well it is pretty much annoying crap. If you are looking for an action packed Western look elsewhere.

Anything with Strother Martin or Slim Pickens makes me happy. Robards is great too. Funny entertaining Peckinpah western.

The Ballad Of Cable Hogue Dir: Sam Peckinpah. It is one of great efforts on the subject of lost of American Old-West. I seldom get itchy in later western movies, depicting vehicles. However, here you get central issue of modernity coming to West. Jason Robards brings excellent comic style to his acting (as always), he is all the good thing to watch and like this movie.
