Loved this Western...not your usual shoot to kill type..a good story with lots of human character on exhibition ! A great watch !

Just another solid reason to like Paul Newman. I think it has to be one of the better westerns I've seen because it goes a little beyond the conventional story and throws in some stuff that had to be controversial in 1967. The shooting scenes are mostly ridiculous, but the film more than makes up for it with witty writing and brilliant acting.

John Russell is the half breed rejected by white society, but when the chips are down everyone follows his lead because he can "cut it." Russell is the anti-hero who sees people and events exactly the way they are instead of the way they should be, but ultimately the morals of the society that rejected him force him into a confrontation that he can't escape alive.
