Frustrating... If only they listened to Newman.

An old western with it's own odd-funny atmosphere. Paul Newman is good of course but the bad guy is one of the best evils ever. Great one.

Slow meandering western that has very little story but a pretty great performance from Paul Newman is what makes this worth seeing.

John Russell (Newman) is a white man who was raised by Apaches. He faces the racism of whites, and inherits a boarding house by his adopted father. After selling it and facing the ire of the renters, he journeys with them on a makeshift stagecoach until they are ambushed by harriers. Cat and mouse tactics aside, the movie is a tense parable of racism, cynicism, and all sort of other deep themes. Its not just a good western, its a good film.

Another in Newman's string of "H" films (HUD, THE HUSTLER, HARPER) and this one is adapted from a Elmore Leonard Western novel. Before turning to crime novels, Leonard wrote a number of Dusters that often dealt with the theme of racism. A neat little American Western filmed at a time when most Hollywood Dusters had bloated production values and ageing uninteresting stars and the real life in the genre was in Italian'Spanish productions.
