For Fans Of: Redemption, Honky Tonk, Oscar performances Date Night: Nope Art Factor: Medium Fun Factor: Low Emotional Factor: High Intelligence Required: Low Essential Viewing: Yes I really hate that I saw this AFTER I saw Crazy Heart. I know that isn't fair to either film, but life is not fair. Both Duvall and Bridges won Best Actor Oscars playing broke down drunk country singers. Which performance is better? That I will leave up to you. But as far as movies go, this one just isn't as good as Crazy Heart. Tender Mercies is great, don't get me wrong, it just isn't the best movie about drunken country singers that win Oscars. I filed it under essential though because the performance given by Duvall is just that damn good and should not be missed.

Simple and strong. I wish they'd not talk too much and use music better, but still, as a man, I cannot help but feel sympathy with Duvall character. I love it not being a typical music success (come-back-to-the-scene) story, too.

It's shocking how the director Bruce Beresford skips over details that you'd think would be essential for the story. Duvall's entire back story isn't told in flashbacks or one big revealing scene. Not only does it skip over the courtship between Duvall and Tess Harper, they never show them making love or even kissing. And i still cared, i still bought it and when it was over i wanted more. Duvall once again brings his 'A' game, the guy doesn't know any other way. I hate country music but the lyrics to these songs are like characters' commentaries on there own lives and it works perfectly.

Four Stars (Don't miss it): Wonderful, moving film about a down-and-out country singer who finds comfort in a relationship with a widow and her son. Duvall is simply magnificent in Oscar-winning role, but whole cast (thankfully) understands that less is sometimes more. Marred only by a narrative that director Beresford lets wander a bit too much.

Mack Sledge is a former country music star, now living in a bottle, who rocks up at a Texas Motel, owned by Tess Harper. When he emerges from his cabin two days later, fresh from a drunken stupor, he realises that the friend who came with him has left him there with no money, and with a bill to pay. This is the story of how earning his keep at the Motel gives him the chance to earn some self respect, and to receive acceptance. His relationship with Harper's son, Sonny (Allan J. Hubbard) is an allegory for him being forgiven past mistakes, as it seems that he is the judge of this man's worthiness. Wonderfully evocative of an old country world. Robert Duvall is a revelation as a singer, and Betty Buckley is a vocal powerhouse as Mack's ex-wife. Take the time to relax with this film.
