I wish I had been able to see this film before I saw Crazyheart because of course the comparisons are made automatically. To me this film is not as dark and it's protagonist is nowhere near as big a trainwreck. The film seems simpler, less complex in the message it is trying to convey. At the same time there is a much stronger religious overtone to this film versus Crazyheart. Strong performances are given by all and especially by Duvall, one of our most underrated actors and someone who could easily be all of our grandfather. The pacing will make it difficult for most to watch but it does allow the film to unfold and delve into the themes it wants to. Good film.

It felt like the 80's version of Crazy Heart, a movie I dearly love. Robert Duvall gives a nice performance and the music in the movie is great. I felt the story could have been juicer but it was a nice movie

First watched this movie at age 12 with my Dad. Didn't really understand it at the time, but since he passed away just 2 years later, this became one of my top movies to watch when I became an adult. Now I own it and watch it over and over with my own teens because of the subtle beauty the movie holds all on its own.

Robert Duvall can say more with a single look then most actors can with an entire script. Mack Sledge is one of my favorite movie characters of all time.

This movie spectacularly demonstrates that, when it comes to great films, smaller is usually better. It's a simple story, simply told-about a country singer who hits rock-bottom and slowly puts his life back together-but it hits all the right notes and takes full advantage of its Oscar-winning screenplay. Best of all, it shows what God can do to work in all things for the good, even if at the time it seems that He is absent or cruel. A real cinematic treasure.
