I like these kinds of films, quiet, simple movies about Midwestern or Southern small town rural life. Robert Duvall is incredible in this.

This is a wonderful movie for country music lovers. I'm a huge fan of Robert Duvallso this was a double treat for me. The singing is not that great but the character Mac Sledge is so down to earth, I loved him anyway. I own a copy and love to watch it now and then. Song " If you'll hold the ladder, I'll climb to the top" stays with you.

I wish I had been able to see this film before I saw Crazyheart because of course the comparisons are made automatically. To me this film is not as dark and it's protagonist is nowhere near as big a trainwreck. The film seems simpler, less complex in the message it is trying to convey. At the same time there is a much stronger religious overtone to this film versus Crazyheart. Strong performances are given by all and especially by Duvall, one of our most underrated actors and someone who could easily be all of our grandfather. The pacing will make it difficult for most to watch but it does allow the film to unfold and delve into the themes it wants to. Good film.

I had forgotten what a wonderful movie this is. Written by Horton Foote, it is the story of a broken country singer who finds his way by becoming part of a family with a Viet Nam widow and her young son. Robert Duvall is outstanding as the singer. It is quiet, understated, yet gripping.

Great story, beautiful film, deeply touching. Robert Duvall is amazing portraying a very broken man who slowly finds his way back to the light. Everyone should see this one.
