Was excellent, but the ending was somewhat sudden to me: seemed like there might be more to tell. Alas. Maybe that's just because I'm a Marine.

Megan Lehmann 10 May 2011

Anselmo handles sensitive issues not with kid gloves, but with a metaphorical baseball mitt, fumbling with tone and obviously laboring to force quirks upon characters and situations.

A genuinely affecting love story told without a trace of affect.

John Patterson 19 May 2004

If the contrast between Marine life and blue-blood luxury sometimes pulls the film in awkward directions, Anselmo's perceptive fondness for all his characters -- parents, children, grunts, even drill sergeants -- more than compensates.

Kudos to the actors for doing a great job. Unfortunately the characters felt two dimensional, even more so for the Deloach character after he goes through basic training. I think the story could have gone through a couple more rewrites to polish it up a bit before getting it on the screen.
