Splitting Heirs (1993)

A member of the English upper class dies, leaving his estate and his business to an American, whom he thinks is his son who was lost as a baby and then found again. An Englishman who thinks he is an Indian comes to believe that he is actually the heir. He comes to hate the American who is his boss, his friend, and the man who has stolen the woman after whom he lusts.

I suppose you could say that this is a bit loosely put together, but never 'dull' as someone wrote! There are LOTS of lovely moments, lots of surprises, lots of fun: like the fact that - white-skinned, fair-haired and blue-eyed - he believes himself to be an Asian until his mother sees the symbolically signficant silver spoon and tells him he was adopted ... I love what Eric Idle has done and though I'm not a John Cleese fan, his contribution is enough to satisfy those who are, and not enough to disturb the rest of us! Odd that it's not better-known, I only found it by chance: but well worth a place in anyone's collection and I will certainly watch it several times a year ... ;-) By the way, he's not a 'lowly bank employee' like the synopsis says, he's a stockbroker handling multimillion-pound deals with his own secretary : but he *lives* in a corner-shop in Southall with his Asian family...

Splitting Heirs is the story of Tommy Patel, a British man who learns he was adopted by a Pakistan family at birth. It also tells of Henry, a man from America who learns, after his father's death, he is the next heir to the throne. Unfortunately for him, Tommy learns that he is the rightful heir and will stop at nothing to reclaim what should be his.The movie is good for a few laughs and the actors all do a good job throughout. Barbara Hershey plays the loving (and sex crazed) mother of Henry, Catherine Zeta-Jones is the bombshell bride to Henry, Rick Moranis stars as Henry (who is nice to everyone even after he learns of his new title), and Eric Idle as Tommy, who just wants what is rightfully his. John Cleese also makes an appearance as the money grubbing lawyer for Tommy, who will also stop at nothing to get rid of Henry.

Briefly flickers like a dying candle in one or two of the scenes where Cleese joins Idle, but otherwise bewilderingly bad. Can we just pretend it never happened, please? Cut straight from The Rutles to Spamalot in Eric's career highlight reel? Ta.

FANTASTICALLY FUNNY! Just so many amazingly awkward situations and perfectly planned punchlines. I must warn you, my comedic taste DOES err towards the British, but this movie is just FANTASTIC. Eric Idle and John Cleese and Rick Moranis. <3

I had a good laugh with this film, i can't believe i never heard of it until now by fluke i changed the channel.. Splitting Heirs is wack, sarcastic approach to revenge and bitter sweet lies. After the duke (eric idle) was forgotten in a restraunt and never found they quickly replaced him with another baby (rick moranis) brought up westernised he fails to fit into his new role as ruler to England. With many jealous and after his fortune his head is practically on the chopping block.
