This wasn't anyone's finest role. Bruce Willis takes a stab at playing a gritty reporter while coming fresh off of Moonlighting and the Die Hard movies... its pretty obvious that he's still testing out his acting chops and hasn't gotten the hang of a purely dramatic role yet. Similarly, Tom Hanks is coming into this movie from Joe Versus the Volcano... and has quite a ways to go before he can pull off a dramatic part at the quality that we see in Philadelphia. Melanie Griffith is... well... not a good dramatic actress at all really. So there's no hope there. I was amused, however, when her southern accent kept breaking into that annoying New York squawk of hers. In the end, this movie was a premature melodrama chockablock full of pretention and unfulfilled expectations. Little did the producers know that if they wanted to live up to the title they need only have waited three years... All that said, I can see how this movie could have made an impact given the emphasis on class, racial tension, and "wilding" at the time.

For all its polish, Bonfire of the Vanities neither sustains the feverish, revolutionary energy nor reaches the visceral peak of Hi, Mom! But as major Hollywood pictures go, it can become stunningly hot-tempered, a quality most journalists are too quick to ignore.

I am not understanding the harsh criticisms that Bonfire of the Vanities receives from critics and viewers alike. The acting is stellar and the story just interesting enough to make for an enjoyable experience. Having never read the book (which the movie appears to be based rather loosely off of) The Bonfire of the Vanities was able to entertain while also causing a chuckle or two. While it will never be considered their finest moments Willis, Hanks, Freeman, Griffith and Cattrall all give admirable performances and bring the movie to life. Definitely one of those movies that is better than the credit it is given.

Este es de esos curiosos casos en el cine en donde usted reune una gran cantidad de talento y aún así no se logra un éxito fílmico. Ya que la película contaba en sus roles principales con Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffith y Bruce Willis, los cuales tenían gran experiencia en comedia. Además en roles secundarios, se tenía a sólidos actores como Morgan Freeman, Kim Cattrall y F. Murray Abraham, inclusive una muy joven Kirsten Dunst en sus primeras incursiones en el cine. Además el timón de la dirección estaba en las manos de Brian de Palma (Carrie, Scarface, The Untouchables, Mission: Impossible). Y hasta el guión había sido adaptado por el propio autor de la novela original. Sin embargo, todo ese gran talento combinado no lograron que este filme refinado con humor ácido sobre la clase élite de Manhattan pudiera sostenerse a buen ritmo durante su presentación, que arranca bien pero rápidamente se vuelve tediosa y confusa dejando un sinsabor en la audiencia.
