Solomon and Sheba (1959)

Near death, King David has a vision that his poet son, Solomon, should succeed him, rather than hot-headed Adonijah. Furious, Adonijah departs the court, swearing he will become king. Other rulers are concerned that Solomon's benevolent rule and interest in monotheism will threaten their tyrannical, polytheistic kingdoms. The Queen of Sheba makes an agreement with the Egyptian pharaoh to corrupt Solomon for their mutual benefit.

One of the laziest and most boring excuses for a Biblical epic I've seen.

It is highbrow nowadays to enjoy this sort of low- browedness, and not admit to too many yawns; all the same, after the first hour or so, I couldn't stop thinking of all the useful and pleasant things I might be doing if I was only outside the cinema.

Was it really that bad? I didn't think so. Of course I have no idea how historically accurate it is but that didn't stop me from liking this film. If anything, the dialogue wasn't anything special but I liked the film because of it's visual splendors. The cinematography and set designs made this film worth seeing for me. Of course I can see how this film may have caused a stir back in 1959 with the Egyptian orgy scene, but it's nothing compared to some movies today.

Taking quite a leap with the Biblical story of King Solomon & the Queen of Sheba, it's all fun enough, with Lollobrigida's heavy accent and sensuous purring, and Yul Brynner still with hair on his head. The pagan orgy scene looks rather tame now, but was terribly licentious for its time, and because if the ominously primal & sexual musical score during the scene, it still oozes naughtiness and works very effectively. It's not "The Ten Commandments", but a lot of people will probably prefer this fluffier 'Bible story'.
