Silent Running (1972)

After the entire flora goes extinct, ecologist Lowell maintains a greenhouse aboard a space station for the future with his android companions. However, he rebels after being ordered to destroy the greenhouse in favor of carrying cargo, a decision that puts him at odds with everyone but his mechanical companions.

Of course the ending makes no sense - but it's beautiful

Wonderful. 70s low-budget sci-fi that makes you sob your heart out at the end. Good FX for the time tho.

Simply excellent, Bruce Dern is an amazing actor plus I was emotionally crippled when those little robots got damaged (apparently they were played by people whose legs had been amputated). The final shot of the last robot tending the gardens - iconic
