Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)

When gigantic robots attack New York City, "Sky Captain" uses his private air force to fight them off. His ex-girlfriend, reporter Polly Perkins, has been investigating the recent disappearance of prominent scientists. Suspecting a link between the global robot attacks and missing men, Sky Captain and Polly decide to work together. They fly to the Himalayas in pursuit of the mysterious Dr. Totenkopf, the mastermind behind the robots.

An utterly mesmerizing, boundlessly imaginative achievement, perhaps -- and I do not use such terms lightly -- the most visually astounding motion picture ever made.

It rocks my socks off, a little bit slow in places but the parts that have action more then make up for the scenes that are lacking

One of my favorite blends of genres. It's able to handle the combination of noir/fantasy/sci-fi quite flawlessly. The effects are just perfect for this and it was clearly researched and developed. The acting is wonderful, I loved the stylized nature of it. Jude Law gave such a charming and enjoyable character that was able to play along with the audience. It has all of those elements of the 30's with this warped fantastical feel added along.

Conran has got himself a looker, with Paltrow in soft focus, the whole world larger than life and a title that, said in the proper low-pitched voice, conveys the tone of the film: exuberant, idiosyncratic and timeless.
