Savannah (2013)

Savannah is the true story of Ward Allen, a romantic and bombastic character who rejects his plantation heritage for the freedom of life on a river. Ward navigates the change of early 20th century America on the wrong side of the law and society, his long-time friend, a freed slave named Christmas Moultrie, at his side. Master of Shakespeare, and the shotgun that provides Savannah's markets with fowl, Ward fights for his rights as a hunter. His charisma and eloquent rhetoric win the heart of a society woman who defies her father to marry him. An elderly Moultrie tells the story of life on the river with his friend to a little boy, who passes the legendary Ward Allen down to the next generation.

Savannah is a great family movie choice... It stresses the value of friendship despite society's pressures. It's also directed with style and genuine affection, making every frame as unforgettable as the last.

It's hard to explain, but this movie wasn't all that bad even though the critics panned it. You have to appreciate the good things, which are really excellent the wonderful scenery and the chance to discover Judy Henske aka "Queen of the Beatniks". Her "Wade in the Water" and the rest of the score are a plus. It's an interesting story, told with good humor, although the storyline is not very clear...but at least someone tried to tell a different kind of story, one about a society in transition. Jim Caviezel's lead as Ward Allen seemed overwrought, the director got a little obvious with some of his characterizations.

Strong performances and exquisite, breathtaking cinematography barely compensate for a pedestrian, underwhelming screenplay.

The true story of Ward Allen, a man whose life was not interesting enough to be the basis for a film.

This movie is exquisite and the photography is breathtaking. It will, most likely, not take the country by storm as "The Butler" is currently and it does help if one lives or really knows Savannah to enjoy the setting. The cast is excellent and Jim Caviezel gives a compelling performance who definitely marches to a different drummer.
