Mifune is fantastic as always in the first of this Samurai trilogy. Kind of bildungsroman prologue about cutting ties with the past and reforming oneself.

It's weak in parts but the scenes with Takezo and Takuan are the strongest. Takezo is a sympathetic, angry misfit with principles in spite of everything.
