Sky High (2003)

A serial-murderer is on the loose who just so happens to also be removing the hearts of his victims and taking them with him. His victims however, are not merely random humans as thought by the police. They are in fact, the past and present guardians of the gateway of the afterlife.On the day he is to be married, Detective Kanzaki, who happens to be on the case, discovers that his fiancé Mina has been murdered with her heart also missing. He also learns that the killers are Kudo, a geneticist, and his evil secretary Rei. The two are trying to obtain six hearts from the guardians so that they may call forth a horde of demons from the Gate of Rage and have their every desire granted. Only problem is, once they open the gate the entire world will be covered in darkness.

Kitamura works on the movie transposition of the sad, bittersweet manga Sky High; barely following the set-up and not so interested in the "softness" of the source, he goes rampant with his favourite gimmicks: lost temples, a romantic, 360 degrees villain (Takao Osawa ostensibly having a lot of fun in the part), gore, supernatural and duels. Sure, subtelity is deadpan lost, but a version Ghost with Katana wielding lost souls is a sight to behold (from the Other Side).

An interesting, but almost comic book-style take on an afterlife and a villain's disruption of it. While interesting and with wonderful choreography, it seems to bumble sometimes.

You have to accept the premise, which is a little loony, but once you do, this movie is actually highly entertaining, and benefits hugely from Kitamura's strong skill with visuals.

One of Kitamura's better films, in my opinion, Sky High really shows his growth as a filmmaker. Where as some of his earlier work (including Versus, which I love) are simple basic storylines but become muddled, unfocused messes, this film takes a complicated, potentially dull and muddled storyline and turns it into a solid and comprehensive supernatural action thriller. Definitely on a par with the directors best works.
