I saw "Saint Laurent" on May 10 th the Laemmle Royal Theater in West LA. After seeing "Dior" a few weeks ago I was hoping Saint Laurent would be similar but it wasn't and didn't really care for it.

This was an amazing film on so many levels. Bonello is a true artist and captured perfectly and beautifully what that era and that man was about. The acting is amazing, and it is especially refreshing to see unfamiliar actors (for the US) , even the smaller parts, do such an incredible job. Very very impressive and intelligently well done. Bravo!

The screenplay... seems to generally lack a throughline or focus, coasting from party scenes full of drugs and alcohol to work-related drama but rarely managing to get inside the head of the self-destructive character the designer had become by the 1970s.

Early stretches that show Yves (Gaspard Ulliel) commanding the seamstresses in his workshop or in a nightclub stalking a statuesque beauty he wants as his model are shot and composed impeccably, with a lustre that feels vintage.
