a classic of intelligent low-budget science fiction in the tradition of the more recent 'moon.' adheres tightly to the structure of the original robinson crusoe, but placed in an outer space context. paul mantee is a little too soap opera to carry the entire first half of the film himself, but there is a earnestness to the whole production that makes it a forgotten classic and worth seeing for fans of the genre.

With its slow pace and long runtime I can't say it makes for a particularly thrilling sci-fi adventure but it's a fun and colourful little piece of retro camp.

This sci-fi excursion starts strong, with a shipwrecked astronaut struggling to survive alone on the face of a barren planet. With limited food, water and oxygen, he must find a way to live. These kinds of films are a button monkey's wet dream, with lots of blinking lights and inexplicable dials and gauges. The science is suspect, as evidenced by the scene where the astronaut, low on oxygen, sucks on a pressurized tank like it was a Big Gulp, rocks that release oxygen when warmed up and underground grottos teeming with sausage plants (seriously). The film falls apart towards the end, however, with the introduction of the unnecessary and uninteresting aliens and Friday, reenvisioned as an interstellar slave to the aliens. Bright Technicolor sets and an adorable monkey astronaut help to keep the film entertaining.

One of the best, original sci-fi movies ever made. And for the era, great effects, story-line, and great actors.

I liked this movie, an updated at the time of robinson crusoe shipwreched on a planet rather than an island..
