Doppelgänger (1969)

A planet is discovered in the same orbit as Earth's but is located on the exact opposite side of the sun, making it not visible from Earth. The European Space Exploration Council decide to send American astronaut Glenn Ross and British scientist John Kane via spaceship to explore the other planet.

Happily, this classic offering has just become available on DVD once more, so is easier to find in the high street. For fans of Gerry Anderson it's a must. The story line is intelligent and the special effects and model work are superb. Gerry commissioned a range of road-worthy full size vehicles to be made for this movie which he later used in his UFO series. The music by Barry Gray is wonderful, the costume designs (although dated by today's standards) still look good and the cast is impressive. Everything was set for the making of a blockbuster movie, but unfortunately it didn't do too well at the box office. (But by the same token, neither did Thunderbirds Are Go, but that doesn't stop it from being a much-loved movie)!

I first saw this film when I was a child of about 14. I remeber enjoying it greatly. The story had the potential to be something really great, but unfortunately the let Gery Anderson of Thunderbirds fame create long and meandering special effects sequences which break the story up too much - its like "yes I get the fact the ship is docking, it has been for the last three minutes". Maybe this is a reflection on the very fast editing of todays films, maybe its me being too harsh. I still think the idea for the story is great though.

Pure Sci-Fi adventure from Gerry Anderson. I loved this when I saw it on the original cinema release and it's just as good nearly 40 years later! Excellent effects and much more stylish than most 60s sci-fi. If you track down a copy of this, do.

Mildly interesting for fans of the UFO TV series, since it re-used a lot of the props, costumes and even actors! This film is OK but just a bit slow and unexciting.
