Ringing Bell (1978)

Chirin is an innocent though adventurous young lamb whose carefree life on the farm comes to an abrupt end when a wolf murders his mother. Confused and angry, Chirin pursues the wolf into the mountains, seeking revenge. The laws of nature are brutal, however, and hatred alone won't be enough to avenge the loss of his mother. Only the strong survive in the wild, and obtaining that strength may change Chirin forever.

Saw this for the first time since I was very little, well over 20 years and it is one of the few that I find just as good. It starts off as a very happy story, the turning point is much like in Bambi, but the remainder of the tale grows incredibly dark. This is not a happy ending story, but it is daring, dark, and beautiful.

Chirin no Suzu, released outside of Japan as Ringing Bell, is a truly haunting Japanese animated film that spins a complex morality web about a baby lamb named Chirin whose mother is killed by a wolf that raids his farm one evening. Devastated by his mother's death, the young lamb attempts to exact revenge on the wolf. It starts off somewhat child-aimed, but quickly becomes this darkly toned beast about revenge and loyalty. Also, the captivating musical score is a pitch perfect backdrop for all the grim intensity. A bit hard to find, even illegally, but worth the effort.

Mature, dark and so honest and just real, breathtaking in its music and oh so unforgettable in its imagery, powerful in its characters and so deep and sophisticated in its themes, Ringing Bill is just fantastic in every aspect. It is a film that deals with the cruelty of nature, the dangers of anger and revenge, the need to overcome your given nature and weaknesses, grief and sorrow and the loss of innocence and it deals with all of those issues in the short running time of 47 minutes which is beyond impressive and achieved by using such powerful dialogue. Its characters are strong and mystical, the animation is phenomenal, the score is beautiful and the tone is admirable. It is one of the best animated films of all time and undoubtedly the most shamefully underappreciated. I was deeply affected by this movie and only true masterpieces can have such an effect on you and I am deeply saddened and frustrated that I live in the world where this film has been seen by just a handful of people.

This story about a lamb seeking out the wolf who killed his mother to train him, tells a familiar tale of the price of revenge but manages to put enough of a spin on it to make it a fantastic animated film, even if it runs a little short.
