Riff-Raff (1991)

Stevie, fresh from prison in Scotland, finds a job on a London construction site. The working conditions are poor and most of the men are working under aliases, due to immigration status and to not conflict with their "signing on" for unemployment benefits. Some coworkers help Stevie secure housing, squatting in a council estate. Then Stevie meets Susan, from Ireland, who's struggling to be a professional singer.

This film is a slow starting one, with very little storyline throughout, it?s billed as a documentary style film, which does come across, but not quite how you?d expect that to be. Something drives this and makes you stay with it, despite it?s lack of excitement, this is a pretty miserable film.

From the synopsis I was expecting a terrible movie. As a matter of fact, it is an excellent inner view of the British lower-class. It is an episode in a life I sure wouldn't want to live!

The building trade is used as Loach's critic of crushed union influence and the struggles in and around independent labour. It is more mainstream than some of his other films as the various storylines are somewhat exaggerated but it is still worth a watch.

I was disappointed by this. Loach's style of using cheap and amateur casts does not always work, especially when the improvisation results in everyone speaking at the same time which is a nightmare to follow. The incredibly unsubtle dropping of social messages seemed out of place in the middle of a session of humourous banter. On the plus side, it is very similar to "Auf wiedersehen pet - the movie" if ever there was such a thing.
