Blackboards (2000)

Itinerant Kurdish teachers, carrying blackboards on their backs, look for students in the hills and villages of Iran, near the Iraqi border during the Iran-Iraq war. Said falls in with a group of old men looking for their bombed-out village; he offers to guide them, and takes as his wife Halaleh, the clan's lone woman, a widow with a young son. Reeboir attaches himself to a dozen pre-teen boys weighed down by contraband they carry across the border; they're mules, always on the move. Said and Reeboir try to teach as their potential students keep walking. Danger is close; armed soldiers patrol the skies, the roads, and the border. Is there a role for a teacher? Is there hope?

Blackboards is both shrill and soporific, and because everything is repeated five or six times, it can seem tiresomely simpleminded.

That is essentially what's missing from Blackboards -- the sense of something bigger, some ultimate point.

Interesting story about school teachers on the Iran/Iraq border without schools to teach in, so they carry blackboards around with them to earn a living teaching children and adults whenever and wherever possible. Using non-professional actors the premise is based on events that have happened in and around the border as towns had been bombed by Iraqi forces leaving many homeless. Although there's a straight up story of human survival amongst inhospitable locales the metaphors and discussions arising form the stronger points of the film. Education, Saddam Hussien, conventionality, tradition and the restrictions placed on the community by their own beliefs are brought to the fore and all serve to highlight some of the problems and criticisms facing people and countries in the region as a whole. It's not as intense or involving as the other films I've seen by Samira Makhmalbaf but it does retain a stronger afterthought of discussion.

Like many other Iranian films, Blackboards counters the generally broadcast ideas about this part of the world. It is a testament of quiet endurance, of common concern, of reconciled survival.
