it is a visual enactment of a dream or whatever, perhaps a sheer experience which the two women almost embrace

This is a bold film, Bergman called this and "Cries and Whispers" his strongest films that pushed the art form to its limit. Bergman made this film about the history of cinema and the problems of the world and its effect on him. His films are very personal and this is no exception, the story is of an actress who stops speaking so her doctor sends her to a beach house to recover with a nurse. While at the house the nurse talks and talks and talks about her life and her problems and at a point she breaks. The other part of the film is Bergman realizing that this is a film that is going to progress cinema, the beginning/middle/end have montages of random clips (a nail driven into a hand) or just images (like an erect penis) and showing the light of a projector light bulb. The film shows the film as it was and where it is going. It is a really shocking film that shows us that it is not real, we see Bergman and the crew, it is not to be seen as a real experience, it is an expression of what Bergman was feeling 1966.

One of the most strong and unbelievably emotional film experiences I've ever had in my life, and ever will. One of the dozens of Bergman's masterpieces. Such a beautiful and moving film that it could very well be a poem or a garden. Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson give two (sometimes feeling like one, of how perfect they are at completing and helping each other) of the most memorable, history-making performances in cinema history.

Ingmar Bergman's "Persona" makes the most sense when you realize the lines of your identity get soft & merge with people you spend a lot of time with. It's rare that I see these days a film piece that feels so personal. As if the parts were tailored with a complete understanding of the actors' wide emotional off-sets and capabilities. A mute actress and a nurse develop a symbiotic relationship; they become co-dependent, and so comfortable in figuring and trying to figure each others' desires, progress in healing comes steady with caring, they reach a synchronistic apex, and progress is eventually tapped into a regressive jealousy that warps into apathy. All this is aside the beautiful black and white scenery.

The great Bergman was at the top of his art at this time and it shows. Memorable scenes with the bests shots I have ever seen.
