Persona (2000)

Into the bully-infested home room class struts a fearless, ceramic-masked student. Squarely confronting a gang of ruffians, it is soon discovered that behind the mask is none other than Danta, an otherwise weakling student who has heretofore been picked on relentlessly by these same bullies. Donned with his mask, however, Danta exhibits a totally other personality, lacking fear and intimidation. The other students, looking on, soon experiment with the power of masks and find to their glee that behind a facade of anonymity, they experience an overwhelming power to act without the confines of self-consciousness.

Though at times it feels like Bergman's just giving his audience a big fuck you, this movie is just too nutty and awesome for me to give it anything other than five stars.

La pelicula mas impactante que he visto. Indagadora, aterradora y de una factura visual exquisita y extremadamente bella. Persona de Ingmar Bergman es una de las cumbres mas altas del cine mundial. I just want to write of the feelings this film left me with - a token of a truly good picture. The beginning of Persona is quite possibly my favorite opening sequence of all time. The film in its entirety takes reality and flips it upside down, while running a gamut of emotions and it really enunciates the variability of human expression and psychology as a whole. Absolutely beautiful in every aspect and oh how I love you, Ingmar Bergman.

Swedish visionary Ingmar Bergman grabs his viewers by the cerebral cortex and bungs them into a world of boundless secrets and perplexing paranoia in this visually arresting, viscerally jarring psycho-drama. Brimming with animosity and unrelenting dread, Bergman's film is tantalisingly creepy from start to finish; a meandering mindfuck you just never want to end. Beautifully lit, utterly unique and undisputedly fascinating.

If you watch this film, you will see why I consider Ingmar Bergman the God of filmmaking.
