People's Hero (1987)

Ex-gangster Sonny Koo finds himself in the middle of a bank holdup by two inexperienced crooks. The robbery goes awry, but before order can be restored, Sonny assumes control. He proceeds to turn the hostage situation to his advantage, and uses the bank's customers and personnel as leverage to free his girlfriend from prison. On the outside, sympathetic cop Captain Chan debates with his captain over how to handle the situation.

derek yee delivers an awesome movie. intense, great character development, a super young tony leung chiu wai. ti lung has a great performance. i'm a big big derek yee fan.

a hong kong film critics guessed it was inspired by "dog day afternoon", but i don't think so. it's much more witty, juicy, well-written, emotionally sensitive, and well-organized. most imprtantly, the theme and message are totally different fm the one starring al pacino. all actors involved were utilized by directors. despite his great talent(no offense, but sorry, i think he's much better than such so-called internationally-acclaimed local directors as john woo, ronny yu, etc.), director yi's sensitivity and care about the minority groups, the issue which haven't been widely discussed (hv we, now?), outstanding all others. it's not the cheap sympathy, but care through the understanding of their feelings and situations. it's best illustrated by the injured pakistani guard. frankly, leung chiu wai was still too young, and hasn't yet enlightened.

A quality crime thriller with great depth. It goes well beyond your typical gun-ho shoot-em-all hk flick but instead goes on to explore the inner emotional struggles and psychological states of the main characters, at the same time reflecting some of the social issues at the time.
