Life for farm workers in Denmark seen through the eyes of a boy that emigrates to Denmark with his father in the late 1800´s. The story in this film is based on book 1 out of 4. It paints a less than flattering picture of the people owning the farms. Very graphic in some parts, but there is no need to sugar coat how things were. Some might say that the two and a half hours is too long and the ending is abrupt. It is part of a series of 4 books and there was really no other way of ending it.

An epic of smaller portions, this is the simple and heartbreaking tale of a father and son relocating to Denmark to find work at a farm. The scene with Pelle running across the ice from the taunting boys is one of the most beautiful scenes in history. It isn't as good as The Tree of Wooden Clogs (Palm D'Or 1978), but VanSydow's acting is phenomenal. A must see.

A gripping story of a father and son who live such difficult lives. I grew very attached to these characters, as if they were my own family. One of the great movies.

Everything you'd expect in a Scandinavian movie -- long, bleak, depressing -- but really a great movie. Outstanding acting with an outstanding depiction of rural and social life at the turn of the 20th century.
