Pat and Mike (1952)

Pat Pemberton is a brilliant athlete, except when her domineering fiancé is around. The ladies golf championship is in her reach until she gets flustered by his presence at the final holes. He wants them to get married and forget the whole thing, but she cannot give up on herself that easily. She enlists the help of Mike Conovan, a slightly shady sports promoter. Together they face mobsters, a jealous boxer, and a growing mutual attraction.

I want to like this movie because it is Katherine Hepburn and I wish I could be her, but this movie lacked any real sign of romance. The film failed to show the development of Hepburn and Spencer Tracy's characters relationship in any sort of way. It seemed like she just decided to have a relationship with one guy because she wasn't happy with the other guy.

There are far too many shots featuring real-life sports stars, but the sparring leads, and Ray's dim boxer, work superbly together under Cukor's deceptively effortless, always elegant direction.

The story of of lady sports protege and her shady manager is a sheer cover for this light farce about gender roles, typecasted with Tracy and Hepburn. Despite having moments of mirth the overall feeling I got was that the writers, Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin, cranked this out over a weekend. Still the star pairing is magnetic. Look for Charles Bronson, Chuck Conners, and Alfalfa (of the Little Rascals) in bit parts.

Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Two great actors from the golden age of Hollywood. Definitely a movie not to be missed.
