Burnt Money (2000)

Set in Argentina in 1965, the story follows the tumultuous relationship between two men who became lovers and ultimately ruthless bank robbers in a notoriously famous footnote in the annals of crime history. After a large-scale hold-up that turns bloody, the two men must flee. It is not long before the police are surrounding the building they are in and they must confront their demons to survive.

I don't think I have been so surprised in years with the strength of a foreign language film. Based on a real life story, it follows the lives of two South American hard-core mobsters who are in love with each other. The struggle to love through pain and mental instability is beautifully portrayed in this film. The strong erotic theme that is linked with violence runs through the story, and the pain that comes because of the love of the two men for each other is sensitively handled. I thought about this movie for days, layers in the story developing as I mulled over it. Cleverly written and wonderfully filmed, it has the most erotic Thelma and Louise type ending, which left me completely wrung out.

if you understand spanish as a native speaker does, you'll have a greater appreciation for plata quemada: there are times when subtext is lost due to imprecise and incompatible translation. that said, the performances were great and the story generally intriguing. but even though the movie started strong, it became less interesting over time. it seemed that the emotional intrigue and depth that had been so present throughout was forgotten and traded in for the "violence," leaving the end to unfold in a patently uncompelling manner that didn't do the rest of the movie justice.

I wouldn't say it's the best film because it was dribbling. It's based on a true Argentinian robbery that took place in the 1960s. The story revolved around the relationship of the 2 gay thugs and how one of their heists affected their relationships. It has a visually powerful editing, Hot and erotic would summarise the whole film.

This film is better than I expected. From some reviews I read, I thought it would be somehow shallow, but I'm glad that I was wrong. "Burnt Money" is a nice mix of action and love, which reminds me of "Bonnie and Clyde", only this time it's 2 men. On the second watch, this film burnt me with the intense passion that I missed out on the first time. There's a scence by which I was blown away, that was when Angel and Nene first met, Angel put his alcohol bottle into Nene's pocket. A simple action that spoke louder than any word, so beautiful a display of trust and love that it hurt. I wish I could see more of their happy time, though they had their happy ending, one way or another...
