Madeline Kahn manages to upstage the unparalleled charm of a wise-ass, cigarette smoking, 9 year-old Tatum O'Neal. Both turn in great performances (as does the devestatingly handsome, pre-Farrah Ryan O'Neal), but Kahn's scene on the hill is pure cinematic bliss. Love it.

What a movie: Great characters, although the girl was a bit unrealistic, because too smart. The story was also top and gives a nice insight into the life of the past.

Every artistic decision fulfills its promise, every technical choice is flawless, every joke pays off. This Peter Bogdanovich thirties period piece looks great and feels even better. And then there isTatum O'Neal. We can only wonder why her Oscar came in the "supporting actress" category; she effectively leads an engaging ensemble cast down every Kansas back-country mile of this roadshow.
