Proof again that American 70s films were groudbreaking as Bob Rafelson takes a European approach to a seemingly simple subject. Nicholson is nicely toned down here as Bobby Dupea a man who seems to have no place be it working in various labouring jobs or with his family as a brilliant piano player. When his father falls ill he decides to take his dizzy girlfriend(A wonderful Karen Black) along for the ride. Of course the whole event becomes a nightmare for Bobby as his boring family and his girlfriend bring things to a head and he must decide what to do about it in probaly one of the bleakest endings to any american film of that time. Rafelson has obviously watched a lot of Bergman ,Rohemer and other directors to gain this style and the film is very well crafted. A film with brains and thats no bad thing

This is Jack Nicholson in his prime. He has two worlds, but he belongs in neither of them. Amazing movie.

Jack Nicholson's best performance, and one of his best films. A must-see!
