A straight shot of noir, no chaser. There's a lot of suprisingly relevant subplots in this film as well as an unforgiving realism in almost every shot. Elia Kazan's direction and choices is/are brilliant. Bonus points for having a young Jack Palance and Zero Mostel as bad guys.

One of the baddies is shot dead, but is discovered to have been suffering from pneumonic plague. The police and public health depts. have two days to find who he had associated with, but want to avoid causing widespread panic and unnecessary spreading of the disease. The film is entertaining and well acted.

A premissa é interessante, mas é destruída pelo roteiro cheio de furos. Apesar de tudo, Jack Palance oferece um desempenho marcante em sua estréia no Cinema.

Great cast: Zero Mostell, Jack Palance and Richard Widmark directed by a legend. But only Jack really shines as a really nasty baddie. Can't realy make its mind up which genre it fits in, borrowing formula from noir, police procedural and disaster. Widmark stars as one man against a cities bureaucracy fighting to save ordinary people like you and me. Interesting depression era background as workers have to decide whether sacrificing jobs for more chance of safety is worthwhile
