The choice to pit [Christian Bale] against a specific bad guy reduces the movie somewhat; we've seen this story in various guises many times before. But it also gives the film a steady focus..

The film is luckily powered by a powerful trio of performances at its core, and a unique, unpredictable structure that constantly reframes the action in a compelling way.

A tragic story that leads to another one. Christian Bale does another amazing job on acting in this film. I didn't hear anything much about this movie until it appeared on VUDU and I finally had the opportunity to watch the film. This is another good story with well development on the characters. The movie shows how much of tragedy befalls on every one. Especially Russell's younger brother. The story shows how much a person can go so far after losing everything, even if it means for the person to fall from what they used to be, a good person.

Shows great relationship between brothers, and how emotions are important to keep under control. Loved it! Christian Bale was flawless in his role!

I think the main reason this film got lots of bad reviews was probably because it didn't want to stick to one genre. The first section was a drama film, then it became a revenge film, then a thriller. And while there's no problem with doing so, it is a bit strange if you give the audience no warning that you're about to do so. The acting in the film was great, direction was good, and I don't really see what was there to be disliked other than the rather odd genre changes. So if you can accept that it will not be the conventional film you might be looking for, this film is well worth watching.
