David, a struggling comedy writer fresh off from breaking up with his boyfriend, moves from New York City to Sacramento to help his sick mother. Living with his conservative father and much-younger sisters for the first time in ten years, he feels like a stranger in his childhood home. As his mother's health declines, David frantically tries to extract meaning from this horrible experience and convince everyone (including himself) that he's "doing okay.

Some movies swing for the fences — and either strike out in big-budget, spectacular fashion, or hit a home run. Others, such as the smart, lovely, funny, occasionally edgy, slightly cynical and ultimately heart-tugging Other People, are the equivalent of the singles hitter in baseball — content to accumulate one small and legitimate successful moment after another.

While maybe not the comedy it's billed as, imagine how good a film has to be in order for a scene memorializing a Molly Shannon character set to Train's "Drops of Jupiter" to be moving

Incredible performance by Molly Shannon. I really enjoyed the way this mother and son relationship played out. Wonderfully funny, down to earth, subtle, and a more real look at a family approaching loss.

A very true to life tale of a family struggling to deal with a member of the family diagnosed with cancer. Great performances and well written, which is full of warmth, but not without an edge either.

A beautiful and deeply depressing portrait of a young man struggling with the helplessness of experiencing a slow personal loss. Chris Kelly did such a fantastic job writing and directing, Other People shines a spotlight on what it feels like to watch both your parent and your childhood die at the same time. This movie perfectly portrays that backpedaling, rip-tide feeling of being sucked back in a role you outgrew years ago. It's comfortable, familiar and yet completely wrong. That sinking feeling that your own life and memories have somehow become "other"- as if you suddenly realized that every standard you've been measuring by has been wildly off this entire time and you never noticed until now. Molly Shannon is absolutely brilliant as the mother, she captures each up and down with grace and subtly- I'd go ahead and say its impossible to watch this movie without weeping at least four times, all due to her performance. It's a simple but powerful movie, with some genuine laughs in there along with the tears.
