Danny Muldoon, a Chicago policeman, still lives with his overbearing mother Rose. He meets and falls in love with Theresa Luna, whose father owns the local funeral parlour. Naturally, his mother objects to the relationship, and Danny and Theresa must either overcome her objections or give up the romance.

Après le succès planétaire de Home Alone, Chris Columbus et John Hughes (ici seulement producteur) enchaînent avec Only the Lonely, une comédie romantique avec l'immense et regretté John Candy qui doit choisir entre une remarquable Ally Sheedy et sa mère, jouée par l'excellente Maureen O'Hara. Alors qu'on pouvait s'attendre à une énième Hugheserie, Only the Lonely se démarque plutôt bien de son envahissant producteur et se trouve être un film extrêmement touchant, parfois drôle, jamais pleurnichard (comme une bonne partie de la filmo de Hughes) et surtout totalement dédié à John Candy, qui y livre probablement sa meilleure performance. Passionnant et émouvant, Only the Lonely est une énorme surprise.
