On the coast of Cork, Syracuse is a divorced fisherman who has stopped drinking. His precocious daughter Annie has failing kidneys. One day, he finds a nearly-drowned young woman in his net; she calls herself Ondine and wants no one to see her. He puts her up in an isolated cottage that was his mother's. Annie discovers Ondine's presence and believes she is a selkie, a seal that turns human while on land. Syracuse is afraid to hope again.

This was a wonderful movie, about how we all need a little fantasy in our lives. A wonderfully emotional movie, with fantastic performances by all the cast members. Definitely one worth watching.

This is an excellent movie; a fisherman catches a woman in his net while trawling. He brings her aboard his boat and revives her, puts her a shore at her Mothers home, see doesn't want to be seen, the fisherman's daughter is told the story about this magical women taken from the sea, who sings to the fishes. The daughter makes her into a legendary Selkie, who has magical powers, can bring good luck, and also grant wishes. Very good film almost family except for the making love scene between Ondine and the fisherman. But as with a fairytales there is a more factual but you will have to watch to find out what those facts are. 5 Stars

A beautiful fable set in Ireland. Although I didn't love the ending, the rest of the story more then made up for it. I loved that the lesson was that misery is so much easier than happiness. I'm also loving the new, improved Colin Farrell. He has been on a roll as far as I'm concerned since "In Bruges".

Neil Jordan is incapable of making a bad film and "Ondine" continues his streak. Great tale of an Irish fisherman who traps an attractive, young woman in his net one day. She calls herself Ondine --- but is she actually a fictional Selkie creature or simply a human with amnesia? In any event, the story is far from predictable and deftly toes the line between fantasy and reality. Another fine acting job by the under-rated, Colin Farrell.
