Like Faces, which was rambling and funny and accurate, and which I admired, the new film demonstrates a concern for panicky, inarticulate squares that is so unpatronizing that it comes close to being reverential in a solemnly religious sense. Husbands, however, also puts one's tolerance of simulated cinéma vérité to the test. It is almost unbearably long.

A very dark comedy/drama that leaves you feeling empty, but I am sure that despite its random narrative it is one that all husbands would identify to some level with. Also a cultural timepiece of the expectations of husbands and their lives.

John Cassavetes is a God. Nobody makes films like this anymore. People think they do. This whole fucking "indie" movement bullshit "honest" filmmaking. Honest my ass. These assholes wouldn't know honest if it sucker-punched them in the balls. Honest isn't some loner writer shooting heroin and getting drunk in his room after his brother commits suicide and his mother gets cancer. That's crap, bullshit wannabe crap. Honest is three friends, shouting at each other, playing basketball ...confused, laughing for the sake of laughing, nonsensical, angry, drunk, gambling, trying to save themselves from the realization that they hate their lives. Husbands is an honest film, and some people may have a problem with that. It's not wrapped up in some nice little timed out three act structure. Falk, Gazzara and Cassavetes on screen together create one helluva a volatile trio. This film is incredible.

Most of Cassavetes's cinema verite films as a director are invariably accused (and with some justification) of being rambling, self-indulgent, and unfocused, but it is precisely those elements that make his best work so affecting and memorable, and Husbands, though deeply flawed, is one of the finest examples of that.

John Cassavetes’ films ostensibly explore what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real, but his conception of stark, unvarnished reality sometimes feels awfully artificial.
