Visual and ideological poem about Liverpool. Wonderful reconstruction of working class live stile and atmosphere, in industrial revolution times. Beautiful documentary footage. It reminded James Joyce images.

A self-absorbed mumbling of an old man; an elegiac poetry of a time and a city: 'As we grow older, the world becomes stranger, the pattern more complicated of dead and living. There is a time for the evening under starlight; a time for the evening under lamplight; the evening with the photograph album. Love is most nearly itself when here and now cease to matter. I said to my soul, be still and accept this, my chanson d'amour for all that has passed.'

Instead of "Mr Cranky Rates the Movies", this is "Mr Cranky Makes a Movie". Davies hates pretty much everything except the Liverpool that can never be again, and Mahler. That said, the editing together of the archival footage is beautiful, as was the use of music (and no Beatles!), and Davies' narration is increasingly hypnotic. Give it 10-15 minutes and you'll probably make it all the way through and come out strangely moved.
