Visually the film looks great, there is lots of fascinating archival footage spliced together here of an unrecognisbale Liverpool and the soundtrack fits perfectly with the images on screen. The narration is slow, boring, self-important rubbish that has no real structure to it. Only when the narration is interrupted by sound bites and the soundtrack does it become more enjoyable. Will only be of interest to those who have grown up in Liverpool or lived here and it's probably a whole lot more enjoyable if you watch it with the mute button on.

Some beautiful shots and sequences, but this works more like a peculiar mosaic than a film. Though it's ripe with some strong narration and wonderful quotes by the narrator (whether or not their significance to the footage is immediately understood), it seems to lack a cohesive arc that would possibly attach the viewer more to the events. Almost works as a history lesson, but lacks the rhetoric to meet its potential.

Rented this out on love film as it wasn't released at my local multiplex and was mark kermodes favourite film of 2008, and the guardian gave it a 5 star rating. So i must say i thought this was going to be something really special. How disappointed was I!! This film for me belongs in the walker art gallery in liverpool and not on the shelves of our video stores. I watched this film in 3 attempts and 2 of those attempts i fell asleep. To watch b&w stills and video archive footage demands a great deal of patience as this is a very slow and boring viewing experience. However, Terence Davies narration is rather good and his love and admiration for liverpool is inspiring but as its being told through his selections of poetry and quotes, and for me this didn't help me engage with liverpool's past or present at all. This for me is a turner prize submission where the design brief is to advertise for the liverpool tourist board and promote it's capital of culture. A real bore!!
