One of the most beautiful and moving films I've ever seen.

I will admit I could only take about 20 minutes of this. I would learn the same stuff about Liverpool with my libraries archives, which is exactly where I think my boy Terence went to get his info for this movie. On the flip side, this movie is short, so maybe some day when I need something to fall asleep to, I'll dig up this classically dull movie. Sorry, but I can't recommend subjecting yourself to this film unless you either love Liverpool, love history, or love wasting time.

Some beautiful shots and sequences, but this works more like a peculiar mosaic than a film. Though it's ripe with some strong narration and wonderful quotes by the narrator (whether or not their significance to the footage is immediately understood), it seems to lack a cohesive arc that would possibly attach the viewer more to the events. Almost works as a history lesson, but lacks the rhetoric to meet its potential.

Caustic, rueful and profound in equal measure, Davies' new documentary rises above the muck of Cannes, be it on screen or underfoot.

Past and present are summoned up, and contrasted, yet their emotional impact is intermingled in a collage of archival images and footage, and newly filmed material, set against music, sound and the filmmaker's voice.
