A wild tangle of hair, hawkish nose, half-lidded eyes, extravagant gestures, androgynous physicality; he's in his mid-twenties when his masterpiece, Bringing it all Back Home, is released. This is a guy who the Beatles worshiped and Andy Warhol feared. This is the de facto poet laureate of the sixties. He was at the pinnacle of fame, channeling genius, and he wasn't even old enough to grow a mustache. Dylan never met his fans halfway, and he never compromised artistic discovery. He didn't care if he was idolized. He was smarter than us, and that's all the comfort he ever needed. Everyone else could go fuck themselves. There's never been a figure like Dylan in American pop culture. That's what makes this film a landmark of cinema verite: just watching him read the newspaper is enough.

How can he answer that if you have the nerve to ask him?

a documentary of dylan's last solo tour through england. this movie helped me fall in love with dylan and his moody playful wit. i especially like how he messes with the press.

It's the Grey Gardens of music docs - a clear-eyed, unbiased glance at Bobby D.'s Time and the freakshow surrounding it. No Direction Home may have the stats and I'm Not There may have the cult of personality, but this has something more precious: A "transparent eyeball" approach that refuses to direct the viewer. One of the best documentaries ever, really.
