[Roemer] and his collaborators create images and sounds, characters and situations, that embody the title's existential affirmation.

You know those annoying films about the civil rights movement that have painfully and cartoonishly racist southern whites as the villians, but somehow manage to make "complicated" white men "with troubled pasts" the focus of attention, comin' to the rescue? You know, crap like Mississipi Burning? Where the implication is that, thank god we live in today, where the civil rights movement has finally won and we've made progress? This movie makes me feel the opposite of that.

I was absolutely blown away by this picture. Filmed in 1964 by two unknown filmmakers. No other film of the period, which deals with the topic of social injustice, racism, and the struggle of blacks in the US has done so as effectively as Nothing But A Man does. It's a terrible shame that it hasn't received the attention it deserves.

Roemer had little more than his wits and good intentions to work with, and that DIY attitude makes the movie reverberate like a blues chord.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I actually did. There's no disputing that this is a landmark film and a work of merit. The problem is that for every strong performance (and 1 or 2 are excellent) the rest of the cast is populated with wooden amateurs. As a result I constantly found myself being broken from concentrating on the story.
