A man trying to make a voice while making inner changes for himself. I thought the main character's father (Harris) played an outstanding role for being an alcoholic father who never cared about his son.

It can't be overstated just how Nothing But a Man is militantly tone-deaf to the Hollywood muzak of race relations.

You know those annoying films about the civil rights movement that have painfully and cartoonishly racist southern whites as the villians, but somehow manage to make "complicated" white men "with troubled pasts" the focus of attention, comin' to the rescue? You know, crap like Mississipi Burning? Where the implication is that, thank god we live in today, where the civil rights movement has finally won and we've made progress? This movie makes me feel the opposite of that.

The title almost suggests manhood as something trifling. The film, however, confirms it's a mighty hard ideal to reach.
