Norma Rae (1979)

Norma Rae is a southern textile worker employed in a factory with intolerable working conditions. This concern about the situation gives her the gumption to be the key associate to a visiting labor union organizer. It's been so long since i saw this, I wanted to check it out again. I forgot how good Sally Field is in this, it's a deserved Oscar win (though that song shouldn't have won, it should've gone to The Rose). It's the usual story of the workers trying to beat the system, but it's well structured and told, it's always entertaining. And luckily the side story (or rather, the personal life) doesn't really get in the way, or at least seem like it was just thrown in there to fill up space. The rest of the cast is good as well, especially Ron Leibman as the union guy.

Awesome film that covers racism for some reason, which I felt was unnecessary given the time period. But the main point was about a company who was treating employees unfairly and a union rep comes into town and refuses to leave until the union is either established or never comes into fruition. Very well done, very interesting. Definitely, an amazing film that needs to be seen by everyone.

sally fields is AWESOME. she made me cry a few unionized tears during her big protest moment against the man. i love that Martin Ritt directed this AND Hud/Long Hot Summer, each with pretty incredible female roles. norma Rae forever changes the idea of the bra-less agitator in my mind.
