Terrific adaption of the classic novel. In some ways the movie is more easily accessible than the novel. Great cast and well directed.

It aimed to be poetic and philosophical, but failed to convince the audience the actual interior world of the characters. Irons' performance is good but not outstanding.

Our life is controlled by random events. Our existence is fatalistic. Unexpected misfortune can befall one, from a seemingly insignificant occurrence and can change one's complete future life. This movie is about this basic existential question, a journey into one's own self. It is also a look back into the history of the Portuguese resistance and how it changed the course of life of the people involved. Nicely directed and passionately acted film.

Great film. It's an adventure on real life, an adult movie, in the sense teenagers will find nothing for them here, no boobs, no blood, no explosions. Very poetic with beautiful locations and historical insights into Portuguese dictatorship makes this an must watch if you're a mature, intelligent person.
