Czechoslovakia, March 1939, on the eve of World War II. This must be one of the least suspenseful and least erotic spy films ever. And it's a case of two villainous sides (after all, England sold out Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany) conspiring to steal (defensive, naturally) munitions, obscured/symbolized by an entirely unconvincing love triangle (the subtle/repressed homoeroticism is more compelling). But all the phony English folksiness and dry humor depicted here is almost enough to make me root for the Nazis. And (spoiler alert!) regret not seeing Rex Harrison end up in a concentration camp (invented by England in the Boer War, by the way). Fritz Lang's Man Hunt is much better.

A must see for nostalgia and history buffs as this one was filmed in 1940, shortly after WW2 broke out. A great thriller with a great ending.

Solid spy-thriller movie with a decent shootout at the end. There was some good humor here and there in the film, too. Reminded me somehow of Hitchcock's "Notorious"; probably just for the way the plot revolved around romance and Nazis.

This is a lovely potboiler from first-time helmer Carol Reed. It builds wonderfully, albeit slowly, full of nice humor and intrigue until it's miniature-based stellar finale. At a time when tensions were high with Hitler's Third Reich taking over country after country in Europe and become a global threat, to do a movie like this was a bold move for the British film industry, and it pays off nicely. Everything is downplayed so that you almost don't realize how good, how much fun the film is and the work from Lockwood, Harrison, and Henreid is all enables this.
